Handfastings

The ancient tradition of having your hands tied or bound is especially popular in Scotland which is regarded by many people as the birth place of the ritual even though the ritual has been used in many cultures the world over.  You can choose to have a full handfasting ceremony, or just the hand tying ritual in a more personal ceremony.

  • Joining As Equals

A handfasting is a ceremony based on two people coming together as equals, who are pledging the best they have to give to each in marriage.

  • Be Alternative Or Traditional

The ritual lends itself to creative expression – perfect if you would like to take an ancient tradition and make it unique to you. Hands can be tied in many different ways, and the ritual can involve your children, your parents or bridal/groom party, or all your guests.

Alternatively you can have a very simple and traditional version of the ritual.

  • What Would You Find Meaningful?

The piece of ribbon or fabric you use to tie your hands is known as a bann in Gaelic, and you can make it yourself or buy one online. The ritual goes beautifully with the fun ‘Celtic Declarations of Intent’ to lead into it, and the beautiful ‘Blessing of the Hands’ to complete it, or we can explore what else would be meaningful to you to include.
